Antivirals for systemic use
- Aciclovir is one of the main antiviral drugs.
- Aciclovir is converted to the monophosphate form, aciclo-GMP, by viral thymidine kinase. It is then phosphorylated to the active triphosphate form, aciclo-GTP, by cellular kinases. Aciclo-GTP is a very potent inhibitor of viral DNA polymerase.
