• Bupivacaine hydrochloride is a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic.
• It reversibly binds to specific sodium ion channels in the neuronal membrane, resulting in a decrease in voltage-dependent membrane permeability to sodium ions and stabilization of the membrane; inhibition of depolarization and conduction of nerve impulses; and reversible loss of sensation.
