• Buprenorphine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of buprenorphine, a synthetic phenanthrene.
• It is a partial agonist of mu-opioid receptors and an antagonist of kapa-opioid receptors in the central nervous system. Its mu-opioid agonist effect is said to be classical, mimicking the actions of endogenous peptides on CNS opioid receptors. The agonist action results in an increase in pain threshold and increased pain tolerance.
