• Fosphenytoin sodium is the sodium salt form of the prodrug fosphenytoin.

• It is hydrolyzed to phenytoin, which most likely exerts its effect by increasing sodium efflux from neurons in the motor cortex. This leads to suppression of excessive neuronal excitation and propagation of epileptic activity.
