• Amifostine is a cytoprotective adjuvant used in cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy involving DNA-binding chemotherapeutic agents.
• It detoxifies reactive metabolites of platinum and alkylating agents and scavenges free radicals. Alternatively, it accelerates DNA repair, induces cellular hypoxia, inhibits apoptosis, alters gene expression or alters enzyme activity.
