• Azathioprine is a immunosuppressive anti-metabolite drugs but it's also active as desease modifying antirheumatic drugs.
• Pale yellow powder. Pratically insoluble in water and in ethanol. Soluble in dilute solution of alkali hydroxide and sparingly soluble in dilute mineral acids.
• The 6-MP releasing azathioprine thus acts as an antimetabolite involved in the enzymatic level of purine metabolism. It inhibits the biosynthesis of normal nucleotides used in the constitution of nucleic acids and thus prevents the proliferation of cells involved in the determination and amplification of the immune response.
