• Doxepin hydrochloride is a dibenzoxepin derivative and a tricyclic antidepressant with antipruritic and sedative activities.
• It blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin into presynaptic terminals, thereby prolonging the availability of monoaminergic neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft and enhancing their action, resulting in sedative effects.
