- Irinotecan hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of irinotecan, a pro-drug whose active metabolite inhibits topoisomerase 1.
- Yellow crystalline powder.
- It is a pro-drug activated by carboxylesterase preferentially in tumor tissue to an active metabolite, SN-38 inhibiting topoisomerase 1. Inhibition of topoisomerase I results in single-strand DNA breaks that block DNA replication.
