- Chlorobutanol anhydrous is a chemical preservative, hypnotic and sedative, and a weak local anesthetic similar in nature to chloral hydrate.
- White or almost white crystalline powder or colourless crystals.
- Chlorobutanol anhydrous likely binds to GABA, glutamate and glycine receptors, but has different effects on each receptor. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor in electrophysiology studies of neurons and recombinant receptors.
