• Donepezil has an indirect parasympathomimetic action through its reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect.

• It reversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase. It then potentiates the action of acetylcholine by preventing its degradation, it increases its concentration in the synaptic cleft. It is called an indirect parasympathomimetic because it potentiates parasympathetic transmissions without binding to membrane receptors.
