• Ertapenem is a carbapenem antibiotic.
• It inhibits the cross-linking of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls by blocking a type of enzyme called penicillin-binding proteins. When a bacterial cell attempts to synthesize a new cell wall in order to grow and divide, the attempt fails, leaving the cell vulnerable to osmotic disruption.
