Antifungals for dermatological use
- Fluconazole is a systemic antifungal drug, related to the imidazole family.
- A white or almost white, hygoscopic, crystalline powder. Slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in methanol, soluble in acetone.
- It inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450 14?-demethylase enzyme. This inhibition prevents the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cytoplasmic membrane, and the subsequent accumulation of 14methyl-methyl sterols.
