Antibacterials for systemic use

• Levoflaxine is an antibacterial of the fluoroquinol family.
• Yellowish white to pale yellow colored powder. Soluble in methylene chloride.
• It inhibits DNA gyrase and bacterial topoisomerase IV, which is an enzyme required to separate replicated DNA prior to bacterial cell division. When the DNA is not separated, the process is stopped and the bacterium cannot divide.
