• Bromocriptine mesylate is the mesylate salt of bromocriptine, a semi-synthetic alkaloid.
• It binds selectively to and activates postsynaptic dopamine D2 receptors in the striated body of the central nervous system. Activation of these D2 receptors activates inhibitory G-proteins, which inhibit adenylyl cyclase, preventing cAMP-mediated signal transduction and resulting in inhibition of neurotransmission and an antidyskinetic effect.
