Antipaludism
- Chloroquine phosphate is a synthetic antimalarial drug of the 4-aminoquinoline family.
- White or almost white crystalline powder, hygroscopic. Freely soluble in water, very slightly soluble in alcohol and in methanol.
- It binds to ferriprotoporphyrin IX to produce a toxic complex for the parasite. Its ability to concentrate in the parasitized red blood cells would account for its particular effectiveness in the erythrocytic stages of the parasite's development.
