• Rifaximin is a rifamycin antibiotic.
• White or slightly pale reddish yellow crystalline powder.
• It binds irreversibly to the beta subunit of the bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme and thus inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis.
