• Ergotamine tartrate is the salt tartrate form of ergotamine, an ergot alkaloid and an alpha adrenergic agonist with vasoconstrictor activity.
• White or very pale yellow crystal powder.
• It binds selectively to alpha-adrenergic receptors, thereby stimulating vascular smooth muscle and causing vasoconstriction in arteries and veins. It also blocks serotonin 5-HT1D receptors, thus also causing vasoconstriction of cerebral blood vessels. The constriction of cerebral blood vessels caused by this agent may reduce blood flow and pressure in the cerebral arteries and relieve the pain of vascular headaches.
